Historique: Raoul de Zahringen
Born in 1130, third son of Duke Conrad of Zahringen of Swabia and Clemence of Namur. He studied at the Mainz Cathedral School. He was elected prince-bishop of Liège in 1167. On 11 April 1174 he bought from the Emperor Frederic I Barbarossa for 1,000 marks Imperial property on the left bank of the Meuse including Saint-Trond and the villages of Rotem, Vroenhoven, Montenaken, Vreren and Veulen. He rebuilt the Saint-Lambert cathedral and the episcopal palace destroyed by the fire of Liège on 26 April 1185. Around 1188, the Cistercian abbey of Val-Saint-Lambert was founded. In April 1189, the bishop accompanies the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Frederic Barbarossa in the third crusade and participates in the siege of Saint-Jean-d'Acre. Raoul de Zahringen died in Herdern (Friborg) on 5 August 1191 and was buried in the monastery of Saint-Pierre-en-Forêt-Noire. It is from the reign of Raoul de Zahringen that the use of currencies is generalized for transactions and even modest trade to the detriment of barter.

Denier (Dengis 372)
This denier was struck with a hammer at Maastricht before April 11, 1174, when the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa pawned imperial lands west of the Meuse. On the reverse of this denier is the key of Saint-Servais. This is the attribute of the saint since the manuscript of Jocundus of 1070 "Sancti Servatii Actus". The medieval legend tells that Saint Servais receives the key of Saint-Pierre from Pope Sylvestre 1st during a stay in Rome. It is a miraculous key and a divine fabrication "clavem fabricationis divine".
