Historique: Henri de Leez
The family of Henri II de Leez is from the nobility of Grand-Leez (Gembloux). In 1135, he is canon of Saint-Lambert and parish priest of Grand-Axhe (Waremme). In 1141/42, he became archdeacon of Famenne then provost of Saint-Lambert. He is elected prince-bishop of Liège, May 13, 1145. Alberon II, prince-bishop preceding, obtains a loan from the count of Namur Henry the blind, to finance the capture of the city of Bouillon. In 1150, the Count of Namur wants to be reimbursed, Henri de Leez request proof of the loan. Henry the vexed blind, invaded the principality and burns Ciney. On February 1, 1151, in the battle of Andenne, in the presence of the relics of Saint-Lambert, the prince-bishop obtains the victory against the army of the count of Namur. In 1151, Henri de Leez accompanied King Frederick Barbarossa in his first expedition to Italy. On June 18, 1156, King Frederick was crowned emperor in Rome by Pope Adrian IV. Henri II de Leez is present at the ceremony as a witness. He will still accompany Emperor Frederick Barbarossa for his 2nd and 3rd punitive expedition to Italy. During the schism of 1159 Henri de Leez will support his emperor and the appointment of antipope Victor IV. When the latter died, the emperor offered Henri de Leez the papacy, but he refused the proposal. He will nonetheless consecrate the new antipope Pascal III. Henri de Leez died in Pavia on 4 September 1164 and was buried in the Saint-Lambert cathedral in Liège.
