Born December 17, 1554, third son of Albert V of Bavaria (family of Wittelsbach) and Anne of Austria, daughter of Emperor Ferdinand I of the Holy Roman Empire. He never received the sacred orders, but was bishop of Freisingen in 1565, Hildesheim in 1575, Munster in 1585, archbishop-elector of Cologne in 1583 and prince-abbot of Stavelot in 1581. He was appointed prince-bishop of Liège by Pope Gregory XIII on June 18, 1581. From this episcopate, several foreign princes succeeded each other (for 136 years), and most often abandoned the affairs of Liège. Ernest of Bavaria was to be implacable towards the Protestants, and applied the peace of Augsburg in 1555. He encouraged the progress of industry, developed the coal-mines and the establishments of metallurgical factories. He set up a Mont-de-piété and gave his palace of Outre-Meuse to the company of mercy to make a hospital that bears his name. He fell ill at Arnsberg and died on February 17, 1612. He is buried in the Cathedral of Cologne. From the monetary point of view, he tried to standardize the currencies of Liege and Brabant. A florin of Brabant was worth four Liège florins. He organized a monetary devaluation on June 27, 1588, all copper coins were to devalue by 1/3, and thereafter, on November 17, 1601, it prohibits the circulation of copper coins, with the exception of that in its name. He thus wishes to limit the abundance of small pieces in the principality. During his reign, four workshops of the bishopric struck coins at Bouillon, Hasselt, Liège and Maaseik.
This double teston is struck with a hammer in the workshop of Bouillon for two years (1611 and 1612). It is worth 30 patars. It is sometimes called the daler of Liège, because the dalers of the Holy Roman Empire are worth 50 patars. Variant 1 does not display a value.
